Articulation

Articulation is the ability to correctly produce speech sounds. Children with articulation difficulties may substitute one sound for another (saying "wabbit" instead of "rabbit"), leave sounds out ("nana" for "banana"), or distort sounds, making their speech difficult for others to understand.

While it is normal for young children to make some speech sound errors as they learn to talk, some errors persist beyond the age when they are expected to disappear. When this happens, speech therapy can help children develop clear, confident speech.

Articulation therapy is an individualized treatment approach designed to help children learn to produce speech sounds accurately and consistently. Using evidence-based techniques, therapy focuses on teaching correct sound placement, practicing sounds in words and sentences, and helping children carry those skills into everyday conversations.

At Renew Pediatric Therapy, articulation therapy is engaging, play-based, and tailored to each child's needs. Families are actively involved throughout the process, receiving strategies and practice activities that support continued progress at home.

Language

Language is how we understand and use words to communicate. It includes understanding what others say (receptive language) and expressing thoughts, ideas, wants, and needs (expressive language).

A language delay occurs when a child is developing these skills more slowly than expected for their age. Children with language delays may have difficulty following directions, answering questions, understanding vocabulary, using words to communicate, forming sentences, telling stories, or participating in conversations.

Every child develops at their own pace, but early identification and intervention can help build the foundation for successful communication, learning, and social interactions.

Language therapy is designed to help children develop the skills they need to understand and use language effectively. Therapy is individualized to each child's unique strengths and needs and focuses on building communication through engaging, play-based, and evidence-based activities.

Depending on your child's goals, language therapy may target:

  • Understanding directions and questions

  • Building vocabulary

  • Expressing wants, needs, and ideas

  • Using longer and more complex sentences

  • Answering and asking questions

  • Social communication and conversation skills

  • Storytelling and early literacy skills

At Renew Pediatric Therapy, we believe families play a vital role in a child's success. Parents and caregivers are included throughout the therapy process and provided with practical strategies to encourage language development during everyday routines and activities.

Alternative & Augmentative Communication (AAC)

Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) includes a variety of tools, strategies, and methods that support or replace spoken language for individuals who have difficulty communicating verbally. AAC can be used temporarily or long-term and may include gestures, sign language, picture boards, communication books, or speech-generating devices. AAC helps individuals express their thoughts, wants, needs, feelings, and ideas while supporting language development and meaningful communication.

AAC therapy focuses on helping individuals develop effective communication using the AAC system that best meets their unique needs. Therapy includes evaluating and selecting appropriate AAC tools, teaching individuals and their families how to use them effectively and incorporating communication into everyday routines and activities. The goal of AAC therapy is to increase independence, participation, social interaction, and confidence by giving every individual a reliable way to communicate.
